Day 33- Crete, Rethymon

We had a quiet night at home and watched a movie last night called "We own the Night" pretty intense as you will understand if you have seen it(with Joaquin Phoenix, Robert Duvall and Marky Wahlberg) Grizzly...!
Dont think we drank enough Greek ouzo cos couldnt get to sleep for ages after that haha!

Got up this morning and we going to head to Kastelli which has the bay my Grandfather was shot down in and passed away as far as we know (well that is where he is in our hearts) and then on to Galatas where there was a big NZ division battle during WWII. However it soon became apparent that our crappy car was slightly clapped out! Every time Graeme put his foot down to get up the hills it sounded very out of tune, was gutless and went ting ting ting ting. Hmmmm....... decided to just go to Rethymon which we had planned to visit and was closer instead and deal with the car later.

Rethymon is a nice little town and we found our way in ok, lots of 1 way streets so you just follow the arrows. Just as well as the GPS had a brain ausfahrt (thats a brain exit in german lol) and died. Seemed to get very slow and wouldnt react to any buttons- either it is where we are, its on greek time! or the battery had got too low to work. Anyway we managed fine without it.

Parked and I went into a pharmacy nearby to find out how you get the pay and display tickets. We had got the last park available, but as we found out later, that doesnt matter to the Greeks- they park anywhere. Got a couple of park tickets from an older guy in a kiosk who grunted only but I think that is also because its the younger generations who speak a bit of english- Im extremely appreciative they speak any as we rely heavily on that. I can only say 'hello ' and 'thank you' in Greek!

Wandered through all the little alleyways, what a shopping heaven this could be but alas- we cant put any more weight in our bags on our next flight.

This shop had an eclectic mix- bottles that had had their necks stretched and twisted! A German para-troopers helmet and a British one also hanging on either sides of the doors if you look
Tagging- no matter where you go! At least it doesnt say crypts or bloods all the time!
I love the ornate old door knockers

Greece is famous for its gold and I did manage to find another gold ring with the 'meander' maze on it like the one I got in Greece on our first trip. It is the symbol of a long and happy life. Graeme really wanted me to get another one and I am happy to report that money (cash)talks and after the lady jeweller raved about our blue eyes (they only have brown in Greece by the sound) we got the price down from 264E to 145! Now thats a bargain considering it is a reputable jewellery firm. They also whipped it across to their workshop and made it bigger for me in half an hour- Efharisto Greece! (thats thanks)

We had a nice lunch sitting outside in the shade- the sun is uber hot but there was quite a breeze today which was good. We got 2 pork gyros- for 1.50E, you couldnt even make it for that?!

Drove home after this and enjoyed the amazing rocky terrain and Mediterranean ocean.

Snow on the mountains- could be NZ

Travelled back- Pepys is great...

But her driveway aint!

Went and talked to Pepy and got her to ring the rental car company to bring us another car- we are at the stage in life where we are happy to politely but firmly not put up with a cruddy car for the rest of our time here and she is great.
They were good and brought us a Peugot 308 instead so hopefully it will go up hills without us leaning forward haha!

The pic below of the yellow tiny cars- they are rentals which have "I am a tourist" painted on the side- big joke to the Greeks I bet! The idiot in front kept driving in the middle of the road- here you drive on the shoulder, the right of the right so vehicles can pass you. This guy didnt move until a petrol tanker was on his bumper lol- then he moved quick!

We have sat and played cards on the balcony and enjoyed a couple of ouzos- as you do! and are going down to the town tonight for dinner by the beach :-)

Sounds like you two had a nice day despite the cruddy car. Perhaps a yellow "I am a tourist" one would be too uncool though - it would shrink me out, even at my exalted age!
