Day 21 London Heathrow- Dusseldorf Germany

Had a bit of a crappy evening with a herd of elephants in the room a floor above us- thank god for earplugs! Made sure when Mum & Dad stay here in June they will be put on the top floor.

We decided to get a cab to the airport- a lot easier especially in the rain, than the bus. We were there in 5 mins! And checked in half an hour before we were due there- Dad you would be proud haha.

People watched for a couple of hours, then were delayed an hour as the plane lanes were congested (yes this is Heathrow) and then when we boarded they needed to offload a passengers luggage who had disappeared, so were an hour and a half late in taking off as had to line up with another dozen or so planes on the runway, its so so busy, but cest la vie! No hassles really and they made up 20 mins in the air. Landed and put our clocks forward an hour.
Look at the walk times to the gates- on the right!

Managed to muddle through customs by joining a queue that all the confused people made (pushing in really) but no-one seemed to mind.

Rudy was waiting for us and straight onto the train to their place. Then we went out for a walk around town- a real mix of contemporary, new construction and the traditional buildings.

We had a beer in a great area alongside the Rhine river-
Hamilton could definitely copy this along the Waikato river. Had the traditional beer which was nice and smooth then met Anna after work and off to their favourite restaurant for dinner.

What can we say……. Welcome to Dusseldorf!! Atmosphere, happy laughing crowd, lots of people, the most amazing schnitzel, pork and beef with sautéed potatoes, sauerkraut and salads and more beer. Finished off with the traditional after dinner shot of killepitsch- tastes like nice cough mixture, aniseed and cherry!

We decided to walk home as we were all pretty full and stopped for another shot at a literal ‘hole in the wall’ bar, where you pay from the street- it really warms you up!

Back to Rudy and Annas- had a lovely evening with great Kiwi/German hospitality!

Hi - just checking back on your blogs. From your comments re the Heathrow PI, have you actually booked a top floor room for us? If so, thanks! Its not just the noise from the herd of elephants, its the excretions the size of motorway rounad-abouts that might worry us! Our ceiling could start sagging!
