Day 20 St Albans- Heathrow

We shouldn’t have read the trip advisor reviews of where we were staying last night, cos it was fine until we read people complaining about the un-clean pillows, linen etc etc. Then Graeme decided he didn’t like it and to be fair it did feel a bit cheap compared to the 4 star hotel the night before. I only began to itch invisible koo-ties (how do you spell that?!) after those thoughts. But was fine- slept all night and only woke up with 2 little bites on me lol??!! Up early and out!

We planned to aim for a whiskey distillery Dave suggested but that was 1 ½ hours in the wrong direction, then thought about Henley on Thames, but decided on St Albans in the end as it was on the way back to London and we need to get the rental car back today.

Since it was early we detoured to Harlow first, but when Graeme asked me if he should turn right down a residential road- and my answer was “No they might eat us” he decided to drive on haha!

St Albans was a different story- a nice town centred around the top of the hill town. We went for a wander around the zillions of stalls, all the way down the town square. Bought the girls a couple of things which Im not meant to do cos we have 3 economy flights before we can take a much heavier case home- but oh well!

Drove on to London and cos the traffic was getting heavy (even at 2pm) Graeme decided to return the car first, then go on to the hotel. We only missed two turnoffs in the manic lanes and had a nice trip out to the airport and back! Found Hertz easily enough though thanks to the GPS, it tells you the lanes to get into on big motorways exits, but not at the roundabouts which are about every 800 yards from the top of England to the bottom- true!

Got a taxi to the hotel- much easier than public transport and having to wait for it- 15 pound is the most you seem to pay with suitcases and they are nice guys too- carry your cases etc.

Back to the humongous premier inn at bath road- it was like coming home and I was on to it and could check us in on the automated machine this time. They have bag scales here for 1 pound a bag- expensive but knew we need to juggle weight around a bit, we will need to buy a backpack in Germany for the next flights, as Graeme’s small man-bag doesnt fit the 7kg allowed in hand luggage to offset the suitcases which are a bit over.

Having a meal in their lovely restaurant or bar tonight. They have marketed this hotel chain well, you have every type here- people here for business, leisure, young old, upper crust, working class, and every nationality. Its good to people watch and the staff are great.

you should go to our place if its like that- the sunrises and sets are great.

PS dont order a steak at premier inn- had one tonight and bought the more expensive one as thought it would be tender....... we have never sent food back before but couldnt get a real steak knife through 2 of them!! They were very good tho and didnt charge me for it or the piece of chicken they replaced them with!
