Days 3 & 4, 17th-18 August

Day 3

Have a fairly good sleep last night – Our bed is fantastic but the pillows weren’t ! But we slept off and on through the night and are ready to go this morning :-).
Walked through the small cobbled lanes to breakfast which reminded us so much of when we stayed in Rhodes Greece, where they had a beautiful outdoor setting and buffet style food. Was lovely – have to pinch yourself to believe we are actually here!

Went back to our apartment and tidied up a bit then lay down and had a little rest as the jetlag is telling us it’s the middle of the night ha ha! Tidied up,  gave the numerous cats outside our door, the last of our milk and then  then were picked up by our transfer  over to the port – the drivers are so aggressive here as there are massive traffic jams and they just sit on their horn if someone doesn’t move fast enough!

Dropped our bags off for our four day cruise then had two hours before we were due down at the dock.  We ended up spending the time in a nearby open air bar with another Aussie couple who were also checking in for a cruise, so enjoyed a couple of hours of cold drinks in the hot heat and chatted away.  Overall we have found the prices here are really cheap – we had a cocktail and three beers this afternoon which were about $40, so cheaper than they would be at home :-).

Then we walked down to our ships and boarded. The futura is a nice ship but we have single beds – boo!  Had a couple of hours to kill so we wandered back in the heat of the day! to get a couple of pieces of pizza – they were massive and $3.50 each, so cheap. Beautiful clear blue sky today but too hot to sit out in the sun. We had a walking tour with a local guide at 5:30 pm of the emperors Diocletian palace which is nearby. It is huge! It was built around 295 A.D., took 20 years to build and was constructed by 90,000 slaves. It always brings home the juxtaposition between the life of slaves & the incredibly wealthy opulence that others lived in. It was very busy with many tourists – really interesting although it was still 35° at 6 pm, so we were melting as we aren’t acclimatised yet.

Wandered back afterwards to the ship had our briefing, met the other guests and had dinner together.
Turns out we were sitting next to a couple from New Zealand who lived in Te Awamutu,  literally five minutes from where we used to live and we knew many of the same people including  my ex colleague and friend Tracy. What a small world!

Down to our room after dinner as we are both feeling spaced out and ready to sleep :-). A lovely day :-)

Day 4

Woke after a good sleep, the ships generator is a little noisy and wakes you a bit but then you go straight back to sleep. Despite the beds being singles, they are comfy and so are the pillows :-). We had breakfast which was a great selection including crêpes filled with Nutella! Delicious :-)

We had a briefing at 10:30 then arrived at a spot where they stopped in a small bay so we could have a swim. It was actually a little cool but lovely. It’s nice getting to know people on the ship and everyone is really friendly - mostly Australians 2 Kiwis some Americans and 2 Canadians. We were treated  to a lovely lunch afterwards of panfried tuna and also a birthday cake to share for one of the guests today.

We went and had a laydown afterwards and surprisingly dropped off for an hour straight away. So lovely to be able to do this when you feel tired, rather than having to keep going when you’re in your normal daily work routine. Pity we can’t listen to our bodies all the time in this way :-). I guess it helps that they also give you a beer or wine at lunch and dinner ha ha!

At 4 pm we arrived at Korcula which has amazing old buildings, turrets and lane ways everywhere. The walking tour was really interesting as the guide explained that all the streets were designed and built so that they allowed their seabreeze to come up the hills and cool the houses. It is also reportedly where Marco Polo visited. There were so many cruise ships that came in,  all small ships like ours but tonight we are tied up five wide and three long in the port overnight.

After the walking tour we have had the evening to wander around on our own and a group of us  decided to sit down on the waterfront and have a cold beer and chatted for a good hour or so then we all met again for dinner and had the local meal of slow cooked octopus and also lamb with potatoes, it was beautiful.

Wandered back to the ship afterwards and enjoyed a local port up on the top deck. Life doesn’t get much better really :-)

Can almost feel the warmth looking at your pics. You both look happy and can see relaxation setting in!

Like Sam, I would be wanting to save every cat and animal I saw! However you learn you cant save the world eh (good Kiwi end to a sentence there haha)

Keep enjoying xx
