Day 29, 14 October Sydney
Had a wonderful sleep last night after missing an entire night the night before! Felt more human today but definitely looking like a chest infection for me, so I started antibiotics this morning and was starting feel better by the end of the day already. We went for a big, long walk around the area Danni showed us which has a proper sealed cycling track that people can walk on as well. Brad is working so we had a quiet day. Danni made cookies that we all enjoyed and we had a pleasant day together. Had dinner later on when Brad got home and then all into bed early as we will be up at 4:45 am tomorrow to get to the airport. A lovely, relaxing day in much cooler weather which is rather nice after the high temperatures and humidity of Vietnam and Cambodia!
Day 30–15 October – Sydney to Christchurch
Up early this morning at 4:45am, into the shower and ready to go to the airport. Brad got up with us as well as they will go for breakfast after they’ve dropped us at the airport. Traffic was light which was good and very quiet at check in strangely, as early morning flights from Sydney are usually very busy. For the first time Graeme’s bag was over in weight. It’s officially 23 kg allowed, but they must allow 24kgs because the Air New Zealand staff member who was lovely, said we were .75kg over on his bag, but mine was 3kg under so we just jiggled around a few things and she helped us put our bags back through, as we had already done half the check in. Walked through screening and out the other side, all in about 15 mins.
Lucky we aren’t travelling tomorrow as Danni sent us a notification, that tomorrow will be hold-ups because of staff industrial action. We just sat around after and caught up on things, waiting for our gate to come up then onto our flight. It was unfortunately delayed twice, apparently because of a medical emergency on the inbound flight, so we were over an hour late by the time we boarded. Because of all the renos in this part of the airport, we needed to get buses out to the plane.
I was really worried about another vertigo attack as Im still a bit blocked up, but we had gone up to the chemist and about a new bottle of flexinase nose spray, to help clear my sinuses. Luckily that worked enough to clear my ears if I put a fair amount of pressure on equalising through my nose. The drops made my throat very dry and sore, but it was better than having another awful vertigo attack!
We landed to 11C & rain, but Canterbury needs the wet after a long dry summer and winter. It meant though, we didnt have much time to chat with Pam & Gordon who so kindly parent our puppy dogs, when we are away - we will have to catch up soon :) . I quickly ran in and got our click & collect food order I ordered from aussie! and squeezed the groceries in, wherever we could! Then 1/2hr back to our lovely home - seems strange after being away for exactly 1 month!
Now a lot of unpacking and washing and generally getting back into the swing of being back. Graeme has work in the morning so needs to get to bed early- weve also lost 2 hours (think we've lost 6 hrs in the last few days with all the travel!)
coming into Christchurch - a lot of rain is evident

I thought of you flying over the mountains and then seeing the braided river (rather full of water), knowing yiu were back in NZ - to be exact, back in Canterbury.
You have done a great job of keeping a record of your trip. I know from experience it isn’t easy to do this when you are tired/sore/in unfamiliar surroundings/brain-drained/a little hungover/trying to remember everything/ etc etc etc!
Well done x
Oh - and nice you were able to spend some time with Danni and Brad on the way back, however short it was
