Day 41 – 5th June. At Sea-> Patras->Olympia

Day 41 – 5th June. At Sea-> Patras->Olympia

Interesting night on the ship – they started making announcements over the loud speakers around 4am in 4 languages that came on every 30 mins or so. To top it off, I was lying awake after the first announcement in the dark and I hear a staff member outside in the hallway saying to another person Ï am going to wake up all the people, ALL the people.”The other person was saying “wait”but the first guy says “No! I will wake up ALL the people.”

Now I'm WIDE awake and having a Titanic moment – should I wake Graeme and tell him something is very wrong, or should I go find Jack and a whistle to go with my life jacket??!!
I decided to lie in a a sweat and wait for a bit, then about an hour later at 5am they announce that they are stopping at the first port. Phew! Wake up call must have been for all those people getting off first?

Lay in bed till wake up call at 8am, the ship is very stable in its sway and it was nice to lay there looking out at the Greek Islands.
We got into port at lunchtime, so off the ship and onto our new bus with the greek driver – Andreas.

We drove to Olympia in the middle of a storm – apparently it NEVER rains here and guess what? This June is very strange they say. But when we got there it fined up and we had a great greek meal that I have forgotten the name of –it had pita bread, pork, yoghurt and cucumber and onion – delicious! Then we went to the Olympus where the original stadium is. The first games were played there in 779BC ! It was amazing that something thousands of years old still exists, albeit in ruins.

We even saw the track with the start/finish line! Apparently only men could attend and they all competed naked –imagine watching the sprints !@#!!
Two of the aussie guys decided to do a strip and go for a run, but only got to undoing their trousers when the local guide panicked bigtime! Apparently, the police would be called and they would be arrested! It was funny though. Also went through the museum with all the stadium artifacts displayed.

Then to our hotel which is by far the largest most sprawled out hotel yet. We are all so sick of being served pasta and fish every night for dinner as you don’t get a choice on tour, but tonight – OMG! We had the most amazing buffet meal with every meat you can imagine. We are all so starved of red meat, so we were all in heaven. Everyone said they are true converts to Greek food now as we haven’t had the regional foods of the countries that we thought we would sample, but this was fantastic!

Oh my god - haven't been keeping up to date with your blogs. Last time you were just leaving Paris! Tuscany looks amazing and will be on our list sometime and worth considering where you stayed by the look of it.
Sounds like you're still having a great time - just taken ages to catch up but it's great to see all your comments and pictures and to think back to all the places you've been and when we were last there.
Getting hungry myself after just reading about your Greek meze. Gyros Pitta - the pork kebab thing - just love them!
All well here - got my contract at work finally. Rained lots since you left but reports say we'll have sun and warm weather for a couple of weeks now.
All the best Matt & Michelle

Which would be worse - seeing the ancient sprinters racing, or watching a game of tennis? Imagine the bruises!!

I'm not signing this comment!!

HI there, Have been keeping tabs but nothing exciting to write...well nothing I can go public with????

Is the figure in your picture a real person that was buried or a sculpture??? Don't know if thats a silly question or not but alas I am no seasoned traveller like yourselves!!!

I would have grabbed a life jacket and grabbed the family and rushed onto deck so I think you were quite well restrained in your waiting!! (probably in my swimsuit as well so not to wreck my clothes!hehehe)

PS you are making me hungry with all your talk about food. I think med. food would have to be my choice!!! To many carbs in pasta for me!

How is the news of the yachting going over there now! YIPPEE we are through. Did you ever find out that Suzanne won dancing with the stars?

Wow you guys - haven't been online for a while - and gee now I'm all cross eyed from reading all your wonderful adventures!! Amazing photos and definately lump in throat stuff reading about your visit to Montecassino. Did have to laugh at you hearing those voices outside your door on the boat though - only you would've lay there and just sweated it out Wees - I would've been up and out quick as look at you!! Oh and you so remind me of Kate Winslet too he he!! Definately mouth watering stuff reading about that gorgeous food - so much so it's time for me to go and raid the fridge!! All is well here. Kate getting over her first cold - poor wee sausage - so different when it's your own!! Could've done with a home visit with that sats machine of yours - probably just as well you're on the other side of the world - or else you would've been sick of me ringing your workphone for help and advice!! Continue to have a blast you guys - just love reading your blob spot! Big cuddles to Danni from Kate. DU xx

Hi Cath- that figure at Pompeii- it is a plaster cast of the actualy boy. There is a real art to how they make them as apparently they dig down under the ground, find what is left of the body and via a small tunnel they pour in the plaster so as to get a perfect replica of the actual person. (Their body cavity is by this time rotted away, just the solidified ash & ava covering is found).

Hi Du,
Sounds like you and Sue have both had babies with teir first viruses, not much fun I know and its always hard to know if they are ok or need medical help. Damn rude of me to be on the other side of the world when you need me!!! Should have made a phone call to Tracy!!!

We are having so much of an awe inspiring time that we dont want ot come back, but for all of you at home- that is what pulls you back!
Glad you like the blob page!! The connection is as slow as a lactating man?!@#!! so it has taken some flippin hours to catch up today!
Cya soon
